Set yourself the right fitness goal

If you are not sure exactly what you want, or what you want to achieve, it makes it difficult to plan how to get it! So often when people start working on their fitness it is because they want to change how they look. This goal is fine, but it does need further consideration. Do you want to lose a few pounds? Do you want to get your body fat percentage down to 6%? Do you want to build muscle?

All of these require different approaches, with differing levels of dedication and change. If you are not clear on your goal you could end up following a workout and diet routine that causes more problems than it was designed to fix.

Let me explain. A lot of clients I have worked with wanted to be ‘toned’. But what does ‘toned’ mean? Giselle Budchen toned (long, very lean, low body fat), or Chloe Madeley toned (more muscle mass) or even Taylor Swift toned (slim, less muscle mass). These are all very different types of body, and a good trainer would immediately explain that you cannot become a different body type. You cannot get the body of Giselle without having some of the same genetic profile (6 foot 2 etc).

Further, different ideas of ‘toned’ will lead to different exercise and diet plans. Unless you are prepping for a bodybuilding competition or photo shoot you DO NOT need to workout twice a day and follow a strict meal plan. I took on a client recently who had a demanding city job and their previous trainer had asked her to workout twice a day 6 days a week and eat a low carb diet. She was exhausted and finally left her trainer when her body fat started to increase!

The point is, consider your goal carefully. If you have a full time job of any kind and a social life, your trainer needs to structure your workouts and progression in line with your other demands. I wrote an article on the better way to lose fat. Take a read and keep in mind that healthy fat loss and muscle building can be done around your existing lifestyle if you have a trainer who knows what they are talking about and doesn’t set unrealistic expectations.

I provide online health coaching that considers every aspect of a person’s lifestyle and how to reach fitness goals without sacrificing mental health. If you would like to know more about my 30 day introduction please send me your details through the contact page.
